As of 2026, the minimum wage in Northern Cyprus is 52,738 TL net. But the real picture varies significantly by sector: civil servants earn 3 times the minimum wage, while banking and healthcare stand out. We examined the real numbers sector by sector.
Salary Scale in Cyprus 2026 — Real Figures by Sector
"What are salaries like in Northern Cyprus?" gets a different answer from everyone. Some say "low", others say "good". The truth is this: the picture changes dramatically depending on sector, experience, and public versus private employment. In this article, we've tried to paint a clear picture of the Northern Cyprus salary scale using current 2026 data.
First, the baseline reference point: Minimum wage
As of 2026, the minimum wage in Northern Cyprus is set at 60,618 TL gross and 52,738 TL net. The Minimum Wage Determination Commission applied an 18.39% increase to the minimum wage.
For comparison: in the previous period (as of 1 July 2025), the minimum wage was 51,200 TL gross and 44,546 TL net. That's roughly an 8,000 TL increase on a net basis in just six months.
The minimum wage doesn't mean much on its own, but it's the baseline point against which everything else is calculated. In Northern Cyprus, many private sector workers earn around the minimum wage or slightly above it.
Public sector: The gap is significant
The average civil servant salary in Northern Cyprus reaches approximately 3 times the minimum wage. According to 2025 data, the lowest public sector salary was set at 56,079 TL — this figure went even higher with 2026 increases.
Public sector salaries by position (2025 figures):
Lowest-level public employee ~56,000 TL Teacher ~68,000 TL GP ~107,000 TL Specialist doctor ~124,000 TL Undersecretary ~151,000 TLThis is why the public sector remains a strong career target in Northern Cyprus. Job security and additional social benefits make it an attractive option when factored in.
Banking and finance
The banking sector in Northern Cyprus is one of the strongest in both salary and career development terms. Institutions like Near East Bank, Creditwest, Koopbank, and İş Bankası KKTC branches are among the region's major employers.
For an entry-level bank clerk, the net salary typically ranges between 1.5 to 2 times the minimum wage. On a net basis, 75,000–100,000 TL is a reasonable expectation. For senior specialists, branch managers and above, these figures are considerably higher.
The advantage of the banking sector in Northern Cyprus is this: operating in a small market means you accumulate responsibility and experience much faster.
Tourism and hospitality
Tourism is one of the locomotives of the Northern Cyprus economy. Large hotels and the casino sector are areas that create intense employment. The picture here varies by seasonality.
For seasonal staff, salaries typically start in the 20–30% above minimum wage range. However, for workers who speak foreign languages and have experience in guest relations, the picture improves significantly. In the casino sector, the tip system creates an additional income that makes a meaningful difference.
Education sector
Northern Cyprus has over 17 universities. These institutions continuously seek academic staff.
Starting salaries at the lecturer level typically track close to or exceed the public sector scale. A profile backed by a doctoral degree and international publications makes a significant difference both in position and salary.
In K-12 education, government schools follow the public sector scale, while private schools operate across a wider range.
Healthcare
Physicians working in public hospitals are paid according to the public sector salary scale. In private clinics, the picture is different — especially for specialists working in dental clinics and aesthetics, the income potential is considerably higher.
For nurse and health technician positions, overseas experience or specialist certifications meaningfully impact salary.
Technology and digital
This sector is relatively new in Northern Cyprus but growing rapidly. There's increasing demand for software developers, digital marketers, graphic designers, and social media managers.
For a locally-based software developer, expecting a salary 2–3 times the minimum wage seems realistic. Freelance developers serving international clients on a remote basis earn in foreign currency, placing them well above this table.
The role of currency
In some Northern Cyprus sectors (tourism, international education, casinos), salaries are set partly or wholly in GBP or USD. This provides protection against exchange rate volatility. When reviewing job postings, clarifying which currency the salary is paid in is critical.
On Munhal, salary information is listed in TL, GBP, USD, and EUR — when comparing, pay attention to which exchange rate is being used as the basis.
